Scientific Name Hylotelephium telephium ‘Matrona’
Common Names Autumn Stonecrop Synonyms Sedum telephium ‘Matrona’, Sedum ‘Matrona’ Scientific Classification Family: Crassulaceae Subfamily: Sedoideae Tribe: Sedeae Subtribe: Sedinae Genus: Hylotelephium
Description Hylotelephium telephium ‘Matrona’ typically grows in upright, vase-shaped clumps up to 30 inches (75 cm) tall. Masses of tiny, star-like, pastel pink flowers bloom in large flattened heads (cymes up to 6 inches/15 cm across) atop shiny, purplish-red stems clad with fleshy, succulent, bronze-tinged, gray-green leaves. Long mid-summer to early fall bloom. Foliage is effective throughout the growing season.
How to Grow and Care When growing Sedum, keep in mind that Sedum plants need very little attention or care. They will thrive in conditions that many other plants thrive in, but will do just as well in less hospitable areas. They are ideal for that part of your yard that gets too much sun or too little water to grow anything else. A common name for Sedum is Stonecrop, due to the fact that many gardeners joke that only stones need less care and live longer.
Sedum is easily planted. For shorter varieties, simply laying the plant on the ground where you want it to grow is normally enough to get the Sedum plant started there. They will send out roots from wherever the stem is touching the ground and root itself. If you would like to further ensure that the plant will start there, you can add a very thin covering of soil over the plant. For taller Sedum varieties, you can break off one of the stems and push it into the ground where you would like to grow it.

Scientific Name Agave parryi Engelm.
Common Names Parry’s Agave, Mescal Agave, Artichoke Agave Synonyms Agave chihuahuana, Agave patonii Scientific Classification Family: Asparagaceae Subfamily: Agavoideae Genus: Agave
Description Agave parryi is a slow-growing succulent, up to 40 inches (1 m) tall and in diameter. The leaves are grey green and have a spine at the tip. One of the distinguishing features is that the point on the tip, which is typically dark tan, brown, or black, is darker than the leaf. Indentations of previous leaves show on the back of each leaf. Bloom spikes emerge from older rosettes, which die after flowering.
How to Grow and Care Agave is not a difficult plant to grow. They’re slow-growing and dramatic and will even thrive on a bit of neglect. If you’re the type of person who likes to fuss with houseplants and water a lot, Agave is probably not the plant for you. If, however, you’re the type of person who likes to set it and forget it, and you have a sunny window, Agave might the way to go. Be aware that some of the large varieties will eventually outgrow your room (unless you have a large greenhouse), and Agave can be aggressive. They have irritating sap and sometimes very sharp thorns that can cause injuries to small children and even pets. In general, Agave do not need to be repotted every year. Most of the species commonly found in cultivation grow very slowly and will take a long time to outgrow their pot.
Uses Man has been harvesting and utilizing Agaves for approximately 9,000 years. The huge plant comprised a huge part of primitive man’s diet. Closely related to lilies there are three major parts which are edible: flowers, stalks or basal rosettes, and the sap.

Scientific Name Zamioculcas zamiifolia (Lodd.) Engl.
Common Names ZZ Plant, Zanzibar Gem, Aroid Palm, Eternity Plant, Succulent Philodendron, Money Tree, Golden Tree, Zu Zu Plant, Fat Boy Synonyms Caladium zamiifolium, Zamioculcas lanceolata, Zamioculcas loddigesii Scientific Classification Family: Araceae Subfamily: Asclepiadoideae Tribe: Marsdenieae Genus: Zamioculcas
Description Zamioculcas zamiifolia is a herbaceous plant growing up to 2 feet (60 cm) tall, from a stout underground, succulent rhizome. It is normally evergreen, but becomes deciduous during drought, surviving drought due to the large potato-like rhizome that stores water until rainfall resumes. The leaves are pinnate, smooth, shiny, and dark green, up to 2 feet (60 cm) long, with 6-8 pairs of leaflets up to 6 inches (15 cm) long. The flowers are produced in a small bright yellow to brown or bronze spadix up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) long, partly hidden among the leaf bases. Flowering is from mid summer to early autumn.
How to Grow and Care ZZ Plant care starts with a lack of care. In fact, ZZ Plants will do better if you leave them alone. Much like cacti, they need less rather than more water. Water the plant only when the soil has dried out. The rare way you can kill this plant is to over water it. A ZZ Plant turning yellow means that it is getting too much water and its underground rhizomes may be rotting. So if you remember nothing else about caring for a ZZ Plant, just remember to forget to water it. It can survive months without water, but will grow faster if watered somewhat regularly. ZZ Plants are happy without fertilizer, but if you would like, you can give the plants half strength fertilizer one to two times a year and only in the summer months.

Scientific Name Echinocereus coccineus Engelm. Common Names Scarlet Hedgehog Cactus, Mexican Claret Cup Cactus, Arizona Hedgehog, California Hedgehog, Claret Cup Cactus, Cream Flower Hedgehog, Golden Rainbow Hedgehog
Synonyms Echinocereus triglochidiatus subsp. coccineus, Echinocereus triglochidiatus var. coccineus, Cereus hexaedrus, Echinocereus krausei, Echinocereus melanacanthus, Echinocereus roemeri, Mammillaria aggregata Scientific Classification Family: Cactaceae Subfamily: Cactoideae Tribe: Pachycereeae Genus: Echinocereus
Description Echinocereus coccineus is a species of hedgehog cactus, usually clumping, it forms large colonies of up to 100 thick stems on each plant at maturity. Stems are semi-erect, dark green, up to 16 inches (40 cm) tall, up to 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter and can vary from almost spineless to wildly and densely spined. Spines are yellowish and turn grey after a number of years. Flowers are up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) long, color ranges from near orange, scarlet, and pink to deep crimson shades. Fruiting 2-3 months after flowering.
How to Grow and Care If you can successfully grow other globular cactus, you can most likely grow Echinocereus well. One of the key factors in success with these is avoiding any hint of wet soil. Because their root systems are weak, they are especially prone to root rot, which will eventually kill your plant. Otherwise, they thrive on a program of strong, bright light; slight water; and a steady diet of light fertilizer. Echinocereus is vulnerable to mealybugs and aphids.
Echinocereus are slow growing cactus that should only need repotting every other year or so. You can prolong the time to repotting by removing plantlets and potting them up in their own pots. When repotting a cactus, carefully remove it from its pot and knock away any clumped soil.
